(Not the Avengers you’re looking for)
I got to watch the Avengers at our little theatre today. They recently upgraded the equipment so they were able to show it in 3D, which was pretty awesome. (Even though it crapped out halfway through and we missed about five minutes of video right in the middle of an action sequence) I’m not going to say too much about it, since that boat has kind of come and left. It was awesome, I think we all agree.
And that was sort of how I felt about Avengers. I knew I would enjoy it. There wasn’t a gamble with it because enough people like me really enjoyed the film. So it’s not that interesting to talk about. I liked it, I knew I would like it, and I wasn’t disappointed. And so it will probably fade to the back of my memory after a while, While movies that I hoped I would like but didn’t (Cowboys and Aliens), Movies that I didn’t expect to like but did (Kung Fu Panda), and movies that require some digging to find the good stuff, (Be Kind Rewind) will come up in conversation, be recommended, will inspire my own work, etc.
And maybe that’s why mediocre movies are made. Maybe the movies that do everything perfectly right don’t get traction in people’s minds, because the discussion can only be “That movie was entirely perfect”, “I agree”.
That said, I’m gonna watch all the lead-up movies now, so they’ve got me by the long tail…
